ACFO du Grand Sudbury

ACFO du Grand Sudbury was invited by Mayor Lefebvre. The presentation by Joanne Gervais, General Director, ACFO and Serge Dupuis, Historian Consultant, University of Laval, will provide information regarding funding that ACFO was awarded from FEDNOr in order to commission a study on bilingualism and the French services or lack of services available to residents of the City of Greater Sudbury.

Cultural Hub at Tom Davies Square and Junction East Update

This report to follow builds upon the information provided to Council in the Library and Art Gallery Project Update presentation on July 11, 2023. This report provides additional information regarding the Cultural Hub at Tom Davies Square as the location for a new Art Gallery of Sudbury, Sudbury Multicultural and Folk Arts Association and the new Central Branch of the Greater Sudbury Public Library.

Greater Sudbury Event Centre Update and Future Direction

This report is a companion to the “Sudbury Community Arena Condition Update and Event Centre Options” report, presented to Council July 11, 2023. This report provides information requested by Council at its July meeting regarding a facility renewal option and a broader district development with private sector participation. It recommends next steps for Council’s consideration.

Members' Motions

20.1

Request for Strategy to End Homelessness in Greater Sudbury by 2030

Presented by Councillors Parent, Fortin and Lapierre and Mayor Lefebvre:

WHEREAS in 2019 Canada passed the National Housing Strategy Act which states “Housing is essential to the inherent dignity and well-being of a person to building sustainable and inclusive communities”;

AND WHEREAS the National Alliance to End Homelessness reports there is a large and growing evidence base demonstrating that Housing First is an effective solution to Homelessness, Housing First being a homeless assistance approach that prioritizes providing permanent housing to people experiencing homelessness, thus ending their homelessness, and serving as a platform upon which they can improve their quality of life;

AND WHEREAS the City of Greater Sudbury currently spends millions of dollars on shelters and other related services to support persons experiencing homelessness;

Whereas issues arising from homelessness can have a negative impact on communities with a higher rate of persons experiencing homelessness;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Greater Sudbury directs that Community Development staff draft a strategy that will provide a road map to end homelessness in the City of Greater Sudbury by 2030, which strategy will include financial and staffing requirements to transition services from temporary shelters to transitional and permanent supported housing, to be presented to City Council by the end of the first quarter of 2024.
